The thing only 4% of adults can do

"Make disciples of all nations."

"Share the gospel."

These are things we Christians hear all the time. What do those statements really mean? We think we know...but do we? Most of us can probably rattle off John 3:16 (see above if you can't), but surprisingly only 3 in 10 know what it means. Additionally, when adults were asked to define what "the gospel" is, only 4% of adults could do it. All too often we start using "Christianese" only to realize it's as foreign to us as to non-Christians. Let's break it down and use words we do know. First, Gospel means good news. What is the Good News? If you feel like you should be able to rattle off a bunch of scripture right now to explain it, remember something. When John the Baptist, the Apostles, Paul and the rest of the early church shared the gospel, none of the New Testament had been written yet. Simply put, the Good News is that our broken relationship with God can be restored because Jesus paid the penalty for our sins. The good news is that our sinful nature had us on a fast track to hell, but because Jesus died for us we can go to heaven. The good news is that no matter what we've done we can choose our eternity: Going to heaven - by accepting Jesus' sacrifice for our sins and making us right with God. or Going to hell - by rejecting Jesus which keeps us separated from God. During his ministry, John the Baptist said, "The Father loves his Son and has put everything into his hands. And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.” John 3:35-36 Peter said it this way, "This is the message of Good News for the people of Israel—that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all...He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”" Acts 10:35-36, 42-43 When you share the gospel it can be simple. Just get to the heart of it all. God doesn't want people to go to hell. He loves them. He wants them to be with him forever. He made a way for that to happen. Jesus is that way. Welcome to the 4%!
